Restorative Styles
This page includes information and links to teachers in our community who offer Restorative Yoga & Yin Yoga classes. Both Yin and Restorative forms of yoga asana are slow-paced. They’re both gentle and suitable for all levels. Moving slowly and focusing on fewer poses within the class, both forms of practice calm the mind and nervous system, enabling you to turn inward, and focus on the breath. They’re both a lovely way to reconnect with your spirit within - when we slow down physically, we have more space to devote internally.
Restorative Yoga
Restorative yoga is a meditative practice that is about really slowing down and opening the body with long passive holds to encourage a release of mind and body tension. It is a different experience than most contemporary yoga. This style works to release deep tension passively, without active stretch. In restorative yoga, props are used extensively to support your body so you can hold poses for longer periods of time, and this allows your muscles to relax deeply because the props, rather than your muscles, are supporting your body. Restorative classes are very mellow, making them a good complement to more active practices (as well as our busy lives) and an excellent antidote to stress.

Yin Yoga
Yin yoga works deep into the connective tissues to activate change at that deepest level. With passive (rather than active or yang) postures, it challenges you to find peace in what may be a slightly uncomfortable position and hold that position for 3 to 5 minutes, or even longer for some poses. Mostly on the floor, the postures work into the energy flows, or meridians, of the body as well as cultivating active stretch in your connective tissues to increase strength and flexibility, improve joint mobility, improve posture, and release trauma in the body.
Yin Yoga is a very simple practice. We settle into a Yin posture for 3-5 minutes and slowly relax our muscles to allow the deeper, drier connective tissues that wrap our muscles and make up our joint capsules to be safely and therapeutically stressed, stimulated and strengthened.
A Yin Yoga practice will stimulate the flow of vital energy - prana - through every part of the body. Simplicity can be challenging: listening to our bodies to find the natural alignment of the pose requires awareness of ever-changing sensations and patterns. Students are invited to practice in a way that is functional and organic.
