MY YOGA

Yoga in the community
During our 2021 lockdown we made an invitation for some of Bermuda's yoga teachers to submit photographs
and reflections on what their home and personal practice looks like and what it mean to them.
The intention is to create a sense of solidarity for Bermuda Yogi's
during a time when we might be feeling disconnected,
and also to encourage everyone to find confidence and joy in their own explorations.

MY YOGA: Gratitude is something I practice on a daily basis but it has been even more evident in my daily practice. Fostering an attitude of gratitude is what keeps me going on and off the mat. Gratitude makes sense of the past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.

"Hey Mom - whatcha doing with you your feet up the tree? I'm doing yoga. Why Mom? Cause it makes me feel like a superhero."

My yoga is my yoga and I love it! What gives you your superpowers?

MY YOGA: teaching and practicing during shelter in place has challenged my creativity in a huge way. I’ve spent more time working at poses that I find more intimidating, and doing a lot more studying! My sequencing feels more creative and dynamic and I’ve generally become more invested in my own practice.

MY YOGA: Be present for life - for the starlit skies and the chirping birds that sing to the morning sun. Be present for the Earth and grass under your feet, for the feel of a snowflake in your hand. Be present for the magic and mysteries of the universe. But most of all, be present for yourself. Then your presence for others and life will naturally follow.

MY YOGA: This is me teaching a zoom Saturday class. I’m using the half moon pose to focus on strengthening the core, activating the brain, and improving stability.  My shirt states “staying in is the new going out” in support of our Shelter in Place status. I used yoga as my focus in maintaining mental & physical wellness during this time while encouraging my yoga participants to do the same.

MY YOGA: This used to be easy. I started practicing yoga in 2006, since then I have attended various workshops and teacher trainings. Yoga is a part of my life and I prefer to practice at home. I like the convenience of waking up and being on my mat in under 5 minutes. I like being able to work on the asanas that further improve the balance of my body. I like to be able to hold longer on my tighter side or to go into the asana multiple times.

I tested Negative for Covid-19 even though I was sick in bed for 4 days and everyone I lived with tested positive. Inversions are fun and they are challenging and I have been confident in headstand since the first year I started yoga. But now it is leaving me short of breath. And I wonder how long my yoga practice will have to be punctuated with long breaks in child's pose and savasana? Some sessions have ended after a couple rounds of Sun salutations, even meditation changes when a full breath leads to coughing. Perhaps the universe is guiding me to increase my focus on relaxation, one of the 5 pillars of health according to Swami Vishnudevananda.
